Isle of Anglesey, north Wales

The Isle of Anglesey is separated from the Welsh mainland by the Menai Straits. Access to the island is over the Menai Bridge.

The island is mainly rural and very pretty. Everwhere there is lovely scenery and peace and quiet. Anglesey has deservedly been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The spring photograph taken on the left shows the lambs in the fields, the yellow gorse in flower. Spring may not provide beach weather but it's a good time to come to see pussy willows, birds nesting and trees budding with blossom and fresh green leaves.

The weather in spring is perfectly suited to a walking holiday in Anglesey, you won't overheat, the island looks fresh and green and lambs gambol in the fields.

As the weather grows warmer, people flock to the beaches, go crabbing off the piers and harbours and fishing. This is a time for families who want to give their children a holiday in the country. Cottage holidays are ideal for families because they can be good value for family and avoid too many restaurant meals unless you prefer not to cook.

Simon Calder, the travel writer, named Anglesey as the Number 1 place to visit in Britain in 2011, and he has been to numerous destinations over the years.
